Skrillex – First of the Year

The dubstep and electronica genres of music don’t really lend themselves well to mainstream radio and TV, but thanks to being featured in the premiere episode of Beavis and Butthead’s much-awaited return to MTV, Skrillex’s First of the Year (Equinox) shot to fame, with the Youtube video receiving millions of hits from people who were amused at the story.

The video for First of the Year features a trenchcoat-clad sexual predator who followed a little girl down the subway, only to be surprised by the fact that the kid seems to possess telekinesis and can summon a black, paranormal creature with long claws. The video is certainly a humorous take on an otherwise dark subject matter, where every playground and every little kid in it could be a potential victim for a would-be predator unless they have the ability to beat up people with the power of their minds.

When it comes to the song itself, First of the Year (Equinox) is a simple dubstep song that borrows several elements from electro house, with some portions of the song punctuated by a sample taken from a viral youtube video, which features a woman yelling at an unseen crowd that she presumes are all illegal photographers, shouting “Call 911 now!”.
